The migrants were plucked from their boats by the Italian coastguard, the navy, a Doctors Without Borders boat and two vessels operating under the EU’s Operation Sophia, which patrols the sea for people smugglers.

In another development, Hungary said Thursday that it has filed a lawsuit in the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg against a European Union decision to redistribute 160,000 asylum seekers among EU member countries.

Hungary filed the suit one day after Slovakia, a EU member, filed a similar suit.

Under EU’s so-called “mandatory quotas", Hungary and Slovakia are expected to receive 2,300 migrants each.
