Presidential election begins in Czech Republic

(VOVWORLD) - 8.5 million Czech Republic voters headed to polls on Friday to elect their next President. Polling stations will be closed at 14.00 (local time) on Saturday and preliminary results will be announced the same day.

Incumbent President Milos Zeman was among 9 candidates racing for the post in the next 5-year tenure. According to a recent opinion poll conducted by TNS Kantar&Median, Zeman is the most favored with 42.5% of support meanwhile his biggest rival, Jiri Drahos, a 68-year-old liberal independent and former president of the Czech Academy of Sciences secures 27.5% of support. It is believed that none of the candidates is likely to win 50% of the vote to become the President and they may face a stronger challenge in a run-off on January 26 and 27.
