Russia says it hit IS with submarine-launched missile for first time

(VOVworld) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday that Russia for the first time struck IS targets in Syria with missiles fired from a submarine in the Mediterranean.

Shoigu said the targets were two large terrorist positions in the territory of Raqqa, and that Russia had informed Israel and the US in advance of its plan to launch missiles from a submarine.

The same day, German armed forces reported that Germany will deploy two Tornado reconnaissance jets and 40 troops to Turkey to back the fight against the IS in Syria. Berlin will soon send a frigate to help guard the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Iraqi military on Tuesday recaptured a key district in the IS-held city of Ramadi. Officials in Baghdad said Iraqi security forces and Sunni militia attacked al-Tameen district in Ramadi, 110 km west of Baghdad, killing at least 12 IS fighters.
