UK Parliament investigates intelligence agencies’ torture allegations

(VOVworld) – The UK Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) will ask the US to hand over redacted parts of a report on the CIA, to try to establish whether British agents were complicit in torture, ISC chairman Sir Malcolm Rifkind said Sunday.

If the committee sees any evidence of such behavior, it could summon politicians from the Labour Party, including former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was in power at the time of the allegations, Sir Rifkind said.
Britain’s foreign and domestic security services, known as MI6 and MI5, have for years been accused of colluding in the ill-treatment of suspected terrorists. However, the heads of MI5 and MI6 have repeatedly said they would never use torture to gain information, and the ministers have also denied sending suspects to face torture abroad.
