Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, stressed that ASEAN is an active and reliable partner of the UN. He said sharing ASEAN’s success story, including the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015, is evidence of solidarity and joint effort toward common goals. The ambassador spoke highly of ASEAN’s central role in the region seen in ASEAN-led mechanisms to promote cooperation with ASEAN’s partners and create a favorable environment for understanding, trust, and dialogue on issues of mutual concern.

Ambassador Quy said that, as Chair of the UN Security Council and a non-permanent member of the Council, Vietnam will continue to boost cooperation between the UN and ASEAN, focusing on disarmament, peacekeeping, fighting terrorism, maritime cooperation, security, and resolving conflicts through peaceful means. Mr. Quy proposed that UN-ASEAN cooperation this year focus on expanding ASEAN’s participation in peacekeeping, increasing women’s participation in promoting peace and connecting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and ASEAN’s Community Vision 2025. Vietnam wants to organize a UN-ASEAN dialogue in October, he said.
