US cuts data sharing with Russia under New START nuclear deal

(VOVWORLD) -The US will stop providing Russia with some notifications required under the New START nuclear arms control treaty, including updates on missile and launcher locations, in what it describes as “countermeasures'' due to Moscow's "violations" of the accord.

The US will also not provide telemetric information to Russia on the launch of US's intercontinental and submarine-launched ballistic missiles, according to the US State Department’s website.

The New START treaty was signed in April, 2010 and will expire in 2026. The treaty aims to reduce the number of strategic offensive arms that member countries can deploy. Russia and the US can deploy no more than 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads, 700 missiles and bombers.

Last February, Russian President Vladmir Putin suspended Russia's participation in the New START treaty.
