During talks in Hanoi, PM Pham Minh Chinh and PM Jacinda Ardern discussed ways to boost the Vietnam-New Zealand strategic partnership, including increasing contacts and people-to-people exchanges. The two countries will continue promoting defense cooperation to deal with growing security challenges such as transnational crimes, terrorism, natural disasters and epidemics.

PM Chinh hailed New Zealand’s provision of nearly 27 million NZD in ODA to Vietnam in the 2022-2024 period.

He said that Vietnam treasures the development of relations with New Zealand and that the Vietnamese Government will continue to encourage New Zealand businesses to invest in Vietnam.

The two sides will work closely to prepare for National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue’s upcoming official visit to New Zealand.

PM Ardern said that New Zealand always attaches importance to strengthening ties with Vietnam, one of its key strategic partners in ASEAN and the region.

She announced the opening of New Zealand’s market for Vietnamese lemon and pomelo and affirmed that New Zealand is ready to help Vietnam develop environment-friendly agriculture.

The two PMs underscored the importance of maintaining and promoting peace, security, stability, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea (internationally known as the South China Sea), promoting dialogue, enhancing trust, and settling disputes via peaceful measures in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
