The exit, which will take effect on November 4, 2020, the day after the next US presidential election, is being criticized by many countries and organizations.

China expressed regret that the US has formally initiated the process of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang at a regular press briefing on Tuesday said he wishes the US would take more responsibility for what has to be a multilateral process, instead of adding "negative energy". Geng called climate change a challenge to all human beings.
Russia said the US withdrawal from the Paris climate accord seriously undermines the agreement because the US leads the world in emissions.
Germany said President Trump’s decision was “regrettable,” but not unexpected. German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze noted that Trump said two years ago that he would the US from the pact. She added the “domino effect” that some worried would take place after Trump’s announcement didn’t happen as the rest of the world has stood together on climate protection.
OPEC Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo said on Tuesday that OPEC fully supports the Paris Agreement. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the UN’s commitments to the 2015 Paris Agreement remains unchanged despite the US’s withdrawal. He said the UN will continue to encourage countries to actively engage ahead of COP25 in Madrid in defeating climate change.
