Xi Jinping is elected general secretary of the Chinese Party Central Committee

Xi Jinping was named chairman of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Military Commission on Thursday at the first plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee.

The same day, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), led the other newly-elected members of the Standing Committee of the 18th CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to meet the press. He said the the new leadership’s responsibility now is to rally and lead the entire Party and the people of all ethnic groups in China in taking over the relay baton passed on by history, and in making continued efforts to achieve the great renewal of the Chinese nation, make the Chinese nation stand rock-firm in the family of nations, and make even greater contribution to mankind. At the closing session on Wednesday, the 18th national Party Congress endorsed a resolution upholding high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, follow the guidance of Deng Xiaoping Theory, the important thought of Three Represents and the Scientific Outlook on Development, free up the mind, implement the policy of reform and firmly marching on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
