The rice machine is placed at Thanh Loc ward, District 12, where social distancing is being imposed after the detection of dozens of positive COVID-19 cases.
A tonne of rice is being provided to support local poor people.
The Vietnam Young Entrepreneurs Association has called on firms to donate rice to the charity drive. They also plan to install more free ATM rice machines in Go Vap district.
People coming to get free rice have to check their body temperature, use hand sanitizer, and maintain a two-metre distance in order to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19.
Each person can receive two kilogram of rice each time.
Free ATM rice machines first debuted in Ho Chi Minh City on April 7, 2020. Since then around 100 machines can be found across the country, whilst they have also spread to neighbouring Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar, and East Timor.
