Russia’s October Revolution important to Vietnam’s socialism

(VOVWORLD) - Over the past century, the Russian October Revolution has proved its great significance to the Soviet Union’s Socialist Realism and its strong influence on revolutions around the world and in Vietnam in the 20th century.

A century ago, under the leadership of the Bolshevik Party and Vladimir Illich Lenin, Russian workers overthrew the Russian autocracy of the bourgeois class and set up the Soviet State, the world’s first state of workers and farmers, opening a new page in human history and a new period of transition to socialism worldwide.

New era of humankind

The success of the revolution marked the birth of the first Socialist State in the world and created a prerequisite for the establishment of the socialist system, a regime without oppression and injustice, a regime of equality and freedom which was the opposite of previous social regimes. The birth of the Soviet State and the development of the Soviet Union in the early decades of building socialism reflected the strength and advantages of socialism.

Assoc Prof Dr. Nguyen Viet Thao is Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics: “The world’s history proves the great, sustainable historical value of the Russian October Revolution. The revolution resulted in the establishment of the Soviet regime of Russian workers, farmers, soldiers, and citizens. That is the socialist regime. With the victory of the Russian October Revolution and the birth of the Soviet State, Capitalism was no longer the dominating force in the global economy and politics and had to co-exist with Socialism.”

Lessons for the Vietnamese revolution

The Russian October Revolution enlightened by Marxism-Leninism inspired Vietnamese workers and farmers to rise up in the August Revolution of 1945 which resulted in the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Prof Dr. Ta Ngoc Tan, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, said the revolution opened a new era for mankind, an era of socialism that changed the life of people worldwide and in Vietnam: “The revolution created a momentum and inspiration for people in capitalist countries to struggle for freedom and rights. The success in the Soviet Union and other socialist countries turned into failure in 1991. This was a big lesson for Vietnam in building socialism. We need to creatively apply Marxism-Leninism, draw lessons from other countries, and take advantage of the wisdom of the mankind to promote our national construction and development.”

Given the drastic changes taking place in the world, the Communist Party of Vietnam is determined to correct mistakes and shortcomings in building socialism and strengthen the national renewal initiated at the 6th National Party Congress in 1986. The Party has been consistent in its goal of national independence in association with socialism, Marxism-Leninism, and Ho Chi Minh Thought, while taking advantage of human civilization to realize Vietnam’s revolution.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan said: “The 6th National Party Congress highlighted comprehensive reform with mindset reform being the primary task. We have changed our mindset but at a slow pace. We still face numerous problems in Party building and rectification. We need to further study the collapse of the Soviet Union, its lessons and reasons because they are still relevant today. We need to discuss and find ways to strengthen national development and reform.”

Vietnam’s great achievements in its national liberation struggles and socialism building over the last 9 decades, particularly in more than 30 years of national renewal, prove the value of the Russian October Revolution.
