The Thanh Thuy–Namon border gate area is a key connection point on the Hanoi–Vientiane Expressway, a project that the two governments are currently implementing. The transport corridor is expected to promote cross-border economic cooperation and improve the livelihoods of ethnic communities in remote and border areas, particularly around the Thanh Thuy Border Gate in Vietnam and the Namon Border Gate in Laos.
Colonel Do Duy Chinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Propaganda and Training of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army, said: "This exchange is one of the key defense diplomacy events of 2026, directly contributing to strengthening the special solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and Laos. It aims to enhance political trust, foster friendship and solidarity, and promote cooperation between the border forces, local authorities, and people, thereby building the Vietnam–Laos border into one of peace, friendship, stability, cooperation, and development."
Activities on July 9 will take place in Bolikhamsai province, while Nghe An province will host the next day’s events, including talks between military delegations from the two countries.
There will also be a welcoming ceremony for the two high-level delegations at Border Marker 460, a tree-planting friendship ceremony, a review of the twinning program between border residential clusters, cultural and sports exchanges, free medical examinations and treatment for border residents, the donation of breeding cattle to poor households, the groundbreaking ceremony for Thanh Ha Kindergarten in Nghe An province, an incense-offering ceremony at the Kim Lien Special National Relic Site, and an exchange of young border officers from the two countries.
