“I was not born in Vietnam. But every time I come here, I feel like I’m returning home.” This statement by Dominique de Miscault, a French photographer who has been deeply connected with Vietnam for over three decades, introduce her new photo book.
She recalls: “I first came to Vietnam in 1992 and was immediately captivated by the beauty, simplicity, and resilience of local people. Over the years, I have captured everyday moments, from the dawn over Long Bien bridge to the tranquility of rural villages. When I met Ms. Hong Ha, we realized we shared the same deep love for Vietnam. My photographs and her commentary complemented each other, creating a story that is both visually rich and culturally insightful.”

“Vietnam – A Journey of Memory” is a collection of photographs previously exhibited by Dominique de Miscault in France from the 1990s to early 2000s. The book is the result of more than 30 years of collecting images, experiences, and reflections on Vietnam, combining the perspective of a Western artist with the commentary and cultural insights of a Vietnamese scholar.
Performance by artists and artisans in France about the Then religious rituals of the Tay, Nung, and Thai ethnic groups in Vietnam, introduced in the book. |
Co-author Dr. Hoang Thi Hong Ha, a cultural researcher who lives in France, said: “This book is a tribute to predecessor generations and a testament to Vietnam’s 80-year journey of preserving peace while advancing integration. It is an opportunity to share Vietnam’s image through history, culture and people. For Vietnamese and French audiences, the book will inspire curiosity, encourage cultural discovery, and serve as a bridge between the two cultures.”
As a meaningful gift, the book enables Vietnamese and international readers alike to appreciate the beauty of Vietnam, through historical milestones and authentic, everyday human moments. It highlights the enduring cultural, historical, and spiritual values of Vietnam, alive in the hearts of Vietnamese abroad and among international friends.
