Speaking at a regular press briefing at UN headquarters, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the UN expressed deep concern over the dangerous military escalation in Yemen and surrounding areas, particularly large-scale Houthi offensives against Yemeni government forces in Ta’iz, Lahj and Marib.
The UN called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and strictly comply with international humanitarian law, particularly the absolute prohibition against attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
According to the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM), fighting over the past few weeks has forced nearly 130,000 Yemenis to flee their homes.
As of last Friday, the IOM had recorded more than 118,000 displaced people. Just three days later, the figure had surged by more than 11,000.
