Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said the attack was unprecedented, appeared to have been planned to disrupt the parliamentary election.
Sobyanin said Moscow had come under the largest-scale drone attack in the city’s history. He reported that several drones reached the Moscow oil refinery, damaging the facility.
Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said on Russia’s Max social media platform that Ramensky district suffered the most serious damage. A drone crashed onto the roof of a 21-story apartment building, triggering a fire and forcing about 400 residents to evacuate. Twenty vehicles were damaged, he said.
Russia’s State Duma election began on Friday and runs through Sunday. More than 111 million people are eligible to vote, according to the Central Election Commission.
Voters are electing all 450 members of the State Duma, with 225 seats contested through party lists and another 225 in single-member constituencies.
