Mr. Lam made the remarks in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Monday on the occasion of his working visit to the United States to attend UNGA 81, themed “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all”, and conduct bilateral engagements.
He stressed that Vietnam’s top priority is to restore and strengthen trust on the basis of respect for the UN Charter and international law. Vietnam remains committed to its policy of independence, self-reliance and strategic autonomy, while pursuing a new development model driven by science and technology, innovation, digital transformation and high-quality human resources.
On that foundation, Vietnam is ready to enter a new phase of international engagement, not only by fulfilling its commitments but also by playing a more proactive role in shaping solutions and contributing as a responsible member of the international community to the promotion of peace, sustainable development, climate action and the governance of emerging technologies.
Regarding Vietnam-US relations, the Vietnamese leader emphasized that both countries clearly recognize their long-term strategic interests in maintaining a stable, substantive, balanced and sustainable partnership. Vietnam considers the US one of its leading strategic partners, while the US continues to support a strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous Vietnam.
He said this provides an important foundation for further strengthening political trust and advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. With growing political trust, increasingly intertwined strategic interests and the commitment of both countries’ leaders, Vietnam–US relations are expected to continue developing in a stable, substantive, effective and sustainable manner.
Discussing Vietnam’s foreign policy priorities, Mr. Lam said they are guided by national interests and the country’s development needs, while remaining closely linked to peace, stability and development in the region and the wider world.
He said Vietnam’s foremost objective is to maintain a peaceful and stable environment, safeguard its independence, sovereignty and legitimate interests, proactively manage risks, enhance dialogue, build trust and properly address differences on the basis of international law.
Vietnam also seeks to promote friendly, equal and mutually beneficial cooperation with its partners while making more substantive contributions to the international community.
Party leader and President To Lam also highlighted Vietnam’s goal of achieving average annual GDP growth of more than 10% during the 2026-2030 period. He said the target was set following a careful assessment of global trends and Vietnam’s long-term development vision.
The goal reflects the shared aspiration of the Vietnamese people to keep pace with global progress and transform Vietnam into a developed, high-income country by 2045.
With clear strategic direction, strong national unity and a firm determination to move forward, Vietnam is confident it can achieve its growth targets and realize its vision of national prosperity, Mr. Lam affirmed.
