Vietnam joined the United Nations on September 20, 1977. Nearly five decades later, it has become an active UN member, contributing personnel, resources and policy initiatives to the organization’s work on peacekeeping, security and development. Vietnam has twice served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, in the 2008-2009 and 2020-2021 terms. It has also participated in discussions and the adoption of UN resolutions and declarations on development cooperation, disarmament, preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, counterterrorism and human rights.
Vietnam and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1995 and a Comprehensive Partnership in 2013. Their ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development in September 2023.
Mr. Lam’s trip is expected to further strengthen Vietnam’s relations with the UN, the US and other partners, while promoting more substantive and closer ties between Vietnam and Canada. It also underscores Vietnam’s stated commitment to playing a proactive and responsible role in regional and global affairs and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development.
