(VOVWORLD) - Niger’s Foreign Minister, HassoumiMassaoudou, declares himself acting head of government after a group of military officers in Niger claimed to have overthrown Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum.

Minister Massaoudou said President Bazoum’s government is still the legal and legitimate power and calls for resistance against the so-called “coup”.
Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum also took to social media on Thursday with a defiant vow to protect “hard-won” democratic gains a day after he was toppled in a military coup.
In a late-night address on Wednesday on national television, Colonel Amadou Abdramane, a spokesperson for a group of soldiers announced that Bazoum had been removed from power and a nationwide curfew has been imposed.
