Vietnam now has a nationwide telecommunications infrastructure with modern information technology. 3G and 4G are widely available in rural and urban areas, even in mountain and island areas. Hundreds of online public services at different levels are available in localities, ministries, and sectors bringing convenience to the public and enterprises.

With internet usage by half of the population, Vietnam is among the Asian countries with most internet users. By 2020, Vietnam is expected to be a leader in the region in the number of mobile phone users. Eric Yep is Director General of IBM in Vietnam: " I think the internet landscape or rather the digital landscape has significantly grown over the last 20 years. In fact I was impressed with the figures when I was looking at the data. Over 95 million population and the internet users in Vietnam has already hit 50.50 and for the penetration is more than 50%, 53%. This is actually higher than the global average and the ASEAN average. I'm very impressed with what has developed in Vietnam over the last 20 years. The government policies on helping and pushing the enterprises and companies in term of adopting internet and setting the right infrastructure has created many successful Vietnamese companies. But I think certainly we can do a lot more by embarking on the next step of cloud technology so that companies and enterprises can use it."

President of the Vietnam Internet Association Vu Hoang Lien says Vietnam’s rapid internet development has posed numerous challenges: “The more opportunities and demands there are, the stronger infrastructure and quality needs to be thus requiring constant updating of technology.”

The internet has penetrated all aspects of life and society. Vietnam is entering the 4th industrial revolution requiring all industries and fields to go digital. Vietnam is promoting the development of information technology, the digital content industry, and the application of added value on the internet to keep pace with global development.
