Ho Chi Minh City’s greenhouse gas emission is estimated to account for 23.3% of the national amount. The city’s leaders have decided the traditional economic growth model is no longer the optimal choice.

Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen said the city is embarking on a green growth campaign with a vision for a sustainable future. The city has mapped out a Green Development Strategy Framework and committed to allocate sufficient resources to achieve net zero emission by 2050.

The Green Development Strategic Framework to 2030, with a vision to 2050, places people and businesses at the center of transformation. It focuses on 4 things.

First, green human resources, including highly-qualified human resources, green finance, and international cooperation.

Second, green infrastructure, including green energy transition, clean water, economical use of water, and resource circulation.

Third, green behavior in green consumption, transportation, and construction. Finally, industries and sectors pioneering in green transformation, such as high-tech manufacturing, green startups, green food, and building Can Gio green localities.

Vo Van Hoan, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, said the city will build an additional set of criteria to evaluate and calculate emissions of businesses and state agencies in order to encourage green production.

Hoan said: “We’ll build a set of criteria to calculate, manage, and reduce emissions. Each business should know how they use energy, and how much carbon should be reduced. When sectors and industries have criteria, we’ll have suitable policies and incentives. Businesses that use less energy and produce fewer emissions will receive incentives.”

Greenhouse gas emission is a challenge for Ho Chi Minh City. It has adopted policies to encourage and accelerate green transformation in businesses, while mobilizing resources inside and outside Vietnam.
