Mekong Delta’s largest flower village bursts into spring colors

Spring has already arrived in Sa Dec flower village in Dong Thap province. Unlike the bustling days closer to Tet, the flower season’s early stage carries a gentler charm.

Though the flowers have yet to fully bloom, their hues are already brightening the village. Above, flower pots sway gently in the breeze; below, waterways mirror the colors, creating a distinctive riverine flower landscape.

The beginning of the Tet flower season is also when growers become increasingly busy. Daily routines of fertilizing, watering, and pest control fill the gardens to ensure the flowers bloom on schedule.

Although the peak selling season has not yet arrived, the festive spirit is already visible on the faces of local flower growers.

Sa Dec farmers carefully tend their flowers, preparing for the upcoming Tet.

Flower production for the 2026 Tet season is expected to reach between 1.3 and 1.4 million baskets, mainly chrysanthemums and pompom chrysanthemums, along with new varieties such as crocuses, sakura chrysanthemums, and multicolored raspberry chrysanthemums.

Currently, Sa Dec flower village is home to more than 4,000 households cultivating flowers and ornamental plants across nearly 1,000 hectares.

“This is the most critical time,” said a garden owner while carefully pruning branches. “The flowers must have balanced shapes, even buds, and perfect colors. Just a few days’ delay could ruin the entire Tet season.”

Many tourists have choosen to visit Sa Dec at the beginning of the season rather than waiting until Tet. With fewer crowds, visitors can fully enjoy the village’s beauty in a relaxed atmosphere.

The pathways between flower trellises have become popular check-in spots, where families, young people, and visitors from Ho Chi Minh city and nearby provinces stroll, take photos, and enjoy the slowly unfolding spring.

While Sa Dec flower village reaches its busiest days, the early Tet season reveals a quieter, more down-to-earth beauty, with flowers growing day by day in anticipation of the Lunar New Year. Established more than 300 years ago along the Tien River, Sa Dec flower village is considered the largest flower village in the Mekong Delta. On December 26, 2025, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized the Sa Dec ornamental flower cultivation craft in Sa Dec ward, Dong Thap province, as a national intangible cultural heritage under the category of folk knowledge.
