(VOVWORLD) - President Vo Van Thuong and Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on Saturday presented gifts and 1,000 national flags to fishermen on Phu Quy island in the south central coastal province of Binh Thuan.

President Thuong asked the local authority, soldiers, and islanders to consolidate all-people national defense and improve defense capabilities as Phu Quy island district holds an important position in national defense, security and the economy.
He stressed the need to improve people’s awareness of national sovereignty protection and solidarity between soldiers and people.
The same day, President Thuong attended a flag hoisting ceremony and a tree planting event at the flag pole marking national sovereignty inaugurated on Phu Quy island in 2015.
This is one of the sovereignty flag poles built on outpost islands from north to south by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Association of Vietnamese Students.
