25th ASEAN Summit concludes in Myanmar

(VOVworld) – A statement by the ASEAN Chairman following the 25th ASEAN Summit highlighted the importance of peace, stability, navigation, aviation security, safety, and freedom in the East Sea. The statement was released Thursday in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, at the conclusion of the 25th ASEAN Summit and ASEAN meetings with its partners.

The statement showed concern over the East Sea situation and reiterated commitments to settle disputes peacefully in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, not using or threatening to use force, practicing self-restraint, and avoiding actions that complicate the situation or escalate tensions in the region. The document stressed the importance of ASEAN members’ pledges to preserve regional peace, stability, navigation safety, and trust, and create favorable conditions for resolving disputes peacefully. Malaysia will be the ASEAN Chairman in 2015.
