(VOVworld) – 90 countries attending a major world summit in Washington on protecting the planet’s oceans have presented 136 incentives to protect 3.4 million square kilometers of ocean.

At the conclusion on Friday of the 2-day “Our Oceans” meeting, US Secretary of State John Kerry said the meeting was intended to protect the marine ecology, prevent pollution, and mitigate the consequences of climate change. Participants pledged 5.3 billion USD to achieve those targets. The US and 20 other countries promised to create 40 marine reserves against the risks of climate change and water pollution. These areas will restrict commercial fishing, oil and gas exploitation, and other actions that harm the oceans.
