Xam singing is a traditional art form which originated in Vietnam’s northern region. In the past, Xam artists, who were usually blind, poured their hearts out when they performed songs that conveyed their truly sad stories.

Xam singers observe the 22nd day of the second or eighth lunar month as their art’s anniversary.

After ritual of offering incense and singing to worship the ancestors, artisans and lovers of Xam singing shared their experiences.

Nguyen Duc Danh, Chairman of the Xam Quynh Phu Singing Club in Thai Binh province, praised the organization of such an anniversary because it offers a venue for artists from other provinces to meet each other.

“The Xam Quynh Phu Singing Club was  established ten years ago and has engaged in exchanges with clubs of other provinces. We have introduced Xam singing in primary schools, taught children to sing Xam songs, and organized a primary school singing contest,” said Danh.
