Arab League calls for consensus to resolve Iraq’s crisis

(VOVWORLD) - Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit on Monday said he hopes Iraq’s political leaders will find a way to end violent anti-government protests and expressed sympathy for the victims among the protesters.

Gheit said he worries that further disturbances will increase foreign pressure and further complicate the situation. He suggested that a consensus among protesters and political leadership under the umbrella of the Arab League is the only way out of the current situation. He said the Arab League will stand by Iraq during this difficult time.

The UN delegation in Iraq has issued a plan to end the crisis and has urged outside parties not to intervene in Iraq’s internal affairs and to respect its sovereignty.
