Atomic bomb disaster and Japan's message of peace

(VOVWORLD) - On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb, named Little Boy, burned the sky of Hiroshima city, Japan. Three days later, Nagasaki was engulfed in flames from a second bomb, named Fat Man.

79 years have passed, the memories of loss and horror are still there for the people of Japan, and especially for the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The survivors suffered an immense psychological trauma and pain.

One victim of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima said: "It’s been a long time, but it's still clearly before my eyes. The night before that day, I laid in my mother's arms, held my father's hand, and the three of us slept together. I didn’t know it would be our last night together. The next morning my parents went to work and never came back. There was a loud explosion. My sister and I were buried in the rubble. My sister also died. I've been alone since then."

An annual peace memorial ceremony is held in Hiroshima to convey a message of peace.

An elementary school girl from Tokyo attending the ceremony said: "I really appreciate the peace we have today. I don't just think about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I think the peace we have today came from what happened in those cities. I hope, like me, everyone learns from that."

Every year, the list of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb victims grows longer. Japan wants to send a message to the world: as long as the world has nuclear weapons, a disaster remains imminent, the pain of which will be felt by everyone. The world needs to learn a lesson from the terrible tragedy in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
