Australian professor: Renewal policy important to Communist Party of Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - The Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) has led Vietnam’s struggles to liberate itself from foreign invaders and establish an independent state, Carl Thayer, emeritus professor at Australia’s University of New South Wales, said in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency to mark the 90th anniversary of the CPV’s founding (February 3).

Dr. Thayer said the launching of the renewal policy in 1986 was of great importance to the Communist Party of Vietnam. Under this policy, Vietnam put an end to a centrally planned economy and developed the private economic sector based on household production. The move boosted Vietnam’s rice production and facilitated the development of light industry. Vietnam expanded trade relations with other countries and encouraged foreign investment to develop its “socialist-oriented market economy”. Dr. Thayer noted that Vietnam’s economic growth and reduced poverty made Vietnam a middle income country.

He said Vietnam is preparing for the 13th National Party Congress early next year to ensure political transition and the harmony of socio-economic policies over the next 5 years.
