Bombing in southern Thailand kills 5 police
Thai police officials said five policemen were killed and another wounded in a roadside bomb attack on Wednesday in Thailand’s southern province of Yala. The attackers hid the bomb near a bridge in Raman and detonated it when a patrol truck carrying 6 policemen passed. Before escaping, the attackers seized dozens of guns. The Thai government has reinforced security in the area to protect teachers, who often are targets of gunmen.

Since 2004, more than 10 thousand attacks have taken place in the 3 southern provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala, killing 5 thousand people and wounded 10 thousand. The attacks often target soldiers or Buddists or Muslims. The government has declared a state of emergency here, and warns that violence is likely to increase in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
