Czech Republic elected to replace Russia on UN Human Rights Council

(VOVWORLD) -United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday elected the Czech Republic to the Human Rights Council to replace Russia after Russia's membership of the 47-member body was suspended in April.

The Czech Republic will complete the remainder of a three-year term that will end in late 2023.

157 countries at the United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of the Czech Republic and 23 countries abstained.

The Human Rights Council was established in 2006 by the United Nations General Assembly with the mission of promoting and protecting human rights globally.
