“East Sea disputes need peaceful settlement”

The Philippines has called on East Sea claimants to respect other countries’ exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in compliance with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Philippine President Benigno Aquino made the statement in a press release following the just-concluded East Asia Summit in Phnompenh.

In related news, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak told reporters on Tuesday after the 21st ASEAN Summit that East Sea territorial disputes are complicated issues which need more time to be resolved. He affirmed that all nations aspire to regional peace, stability, and prosperity. Problems are solvable when all related parties sit back for constructive negotiations, Razak said.

The same day, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard expressed her hope for a code of conduct to settle East Sea disputes peacefully in compliance with international laws and all parties’ benefits.
