According to EU’s diplomatic sources, ambassadors of 28 European Union countries agreed unanimously, but the decision still has to be approved by EU ministers in their summit on Friday. The sanctions targeting Russia’s energy, financial, and defense sectors will be prolonged until January 2017, instead of July this year.

Last week, the EU also extended other sanctions on Russia for another year over Crimea annexation in 2014. Besides economic sanctions, the EU imposed visa bans and assets freezes against Russians and Ukrainians involved in the conflict in Ukraine in early 2014.
