European leaders show willingness to cooperate with the US

(VOVworld) - French President Francois Hollande said Friday he would “clarify positions” with US president-elect Donald Trump during “frank” telephone discussions.

The French leader cited the fight against terrorism, the battle against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq and the conflict in eastern Ukraine among the subjects he wished to discuss. He underscored the “long friendship” between France and the US and the solidarity shown by Americans during a series of jihadist attacks on French soil over the past two years.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has stressed the strategic importance of his country's alliance with the US in a phone call to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory. Renzi also told Trump that Italy wishes to work with the US ahead of the G7 Summit in 2017.

On Thursday, German Chancellor Markel phoned the US President-elect and both leaders discussed bilateral cooperation and the shared values between Germany and the US.
