Foreign Minister holds phone talks with US Senator

(VOVWORLD) - Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on Tuesday had a phone call with Senator Jeff Merkley, Chair of the US's Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies.

Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his hope for the US Congress to support the stable and sustainable development of economic, trade, and investment relations between the two countries.

He also emphasized the need for continued US resources to help Vietnam address the consequences of war, combat climate change, and develop high-quality human resources.

Senator Jeff Merkley affirmed his commitment to furthering cooperation in these areas. He confirmed the strong support of the US Congress for advancing the Vietnam-US comprehensive strategic partnership and promoting a strong, independent, and prosperous Vietnam.

Senator Merkley highlighted the importance of enhancing contact and delegation exchanges, noting that several US Senate delegations plan to visit Vietnam in the near future.

The two sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern. Senator Merkley emphasized the United States' appreciation for ASEAN's central role in the regional structure and reiterated the commitment to strengthening the US-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the US-Mekong Partnership.
