G20 finance chiefs fail to issue joint statement

(VOVWORLD) - Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told media on Tuesday that finance chiefs and central bank governors of the Group of 20 leading economies failed to issue a final communique after a two-day talk in Gandhinagar.

Instead, India, as the host nation, had to issue the G20 Chair’s summary and an outcome document.

Held in Gandhinagar, a city in India’s western state of Gujarat, the event aimed to forge a consensus on reforms for multilateral banks, issue a global guiding principle on cryptocurrencies, and accelerate the debt resolution of vulnerable countries, but the Russia-Ukraine conflict has cast a long shadow over global diplomacy.

Most western countries, including the US, the UK, Germany, and France condemned the Russia-Ukraine conflict, whereas Russia and China opposed such condemnation. As a result, India has been unable to draft a final communique acceptable to all members.
