Greece election: No party wins majority

In Greece’s Sunday election no party won the majority of seats needed to form a government. The Greek Ministry of the Interior announced that with 95% of the votes counted, the New Democracy Party‘s 19% gave it 109 of the 300 parliament seats, far short of the 151 needed to form a government.

Supporters of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party raise flares as they celebrate winning seats in the Greek Parliament for the first time.

The left-wing Syriza party was second with around 16 % and 51 seats, followed by the former majority party socialist PASOK with around 13% and 41 seats. The two leading parties have a disagreement over the bailout package. While New Democracy wants a coalition government to be formed to maintain Greece’s Eurozone membership and adjust the terms of the bailout package, Syriza would like to cancel the package. Greece’s constitution says the leading party will have three days to form a government. If it fails, the mandate will be transferred to the runners-up.
