The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the new record was measured in the suburb of Mungeshpur and Narela, surpassing Delhi’s previous high of 49.2 degrees Celsius observed in May 2022.

The IMD issued a ‘red’ alert of severe heatwave conditions on Wednesday, and an “orange” alert for Thursday, when the heat is expected to subside. Dehli will likely see light rainfalls in the next two days.

Authorities have warned of water shortages as the capital hit by severe heatwaves and supplies cut in some areas.
