During a telephone conversation, Abe said it is impossible to hold meaningful talks with North Korea without the premise of denuclearizing of the Korean Peninsula. He stressed the need to continue putting maximum pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons development program.

South Korea’s Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha asked North Korea to stop its nuclear programs and missile tests. In a speech at the 37th UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, Kang underlined the message of "peace and prosperity" the PyeongChang Olympics sent to the world, and called on North Korea to allow reunions of Korean families separated by the 1950-1953 war.
