The massive protest has been lasted for 4 consecutive days involving many political groups and movements, including leading presidential candidates who lost in the first round of the election. The protesters demanded a retrial of Mubarak and the implementation of a law that would ban some officials, including Ahmed Shafiq, the last Prime Minister under Mubarak’s regime, from running for president. The law is being examined by Egypt’s Consitutional Court. If it is approved, Shafiq will be out of the run-off election on June 16-17th.

In another development, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Tuesday held a meeting with representatives of 18 political parties and independent members of Parliament. At the meeting, it was agreed that the ruling military council will issue a complementary constitutional declaration setting the criterion for the formation of the Constituent Assembly if the parties fail to reach an agreement by Thursday. Head of military council Hussein Tantawi said the council wants the run-off election to go forward and believes that it will be fair and transparent. Tantawi also confirmed that the military council will hand over power to a new president on June 30.
