(VOVworld) - The 30^th Olympic Games drew to a close Sunday evening with a ceremony of spectacular sights, sounds, and music featuring more than 4,000 performers. The ceremony opened with a parade of flags and athletes from 204 countries and territories entering the stadium. As its name, “A Symphony of British Music” suggested, the closing ceremony included an impressive list of musical performances. Thousands of athletes and 80,000 spectators in Olympic stadium and more than 300 million television viewers all around the world were entertained by George Michael, Muse, Take That, the Spice Girls, and music icons John Lennon and Freddie Mercury. Stomp, the physical theater group, impressed the audience by using giant models of London sights such as the London Eye and Tower Bridge as percussion instruments.

In a brief summary, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogge said history has been written by athletes from all over the world. He said the London Olympics witnessed the most records ever, inspired happiness among the athletes and spectators who participated in or watched the Games.
At the end of 2 weeks of competition, the US team led with 46 gold medals, followed by the Chinese with 38. The UK team with 29 and the Russian team with 24 finished third and fourth.
