The model is important for ensuring sustainable and effective rice cultivation with minimal environmental pollution. Nguyen Ngoc He, Vice Chairman of the Can Tho Municipal People’s Committee, said that the city will contribute 50,000 ha to the project.

“We are committed to successfully implementing the project. We aim to develop 38,000 ha of high-quality rice production by 2025 and 50,000 ha by 2030 at the latest,” he said.

The Mekong Delta, a key rice production region in Vietnam,  plays a significant role in ensuring national and global food security.

Forming cooperatives and farmer’s organizations lies at the core of the one million ha high-quality rice project. These groups will be linked with wholesale enterprises to guarantee them a reliable rice outlet and improve farmers’ income.

The project will be implemented in 12 Mekong Delta provinces. The pilot scheme will be carried out in Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Dong Thap, and Can Tho now through 2025.
