Myanmar and ethnic armed groups jointly draft a ceasefire

(VOVworld) - The Myanmar government and ethnic armed groups on Saturday resumed part of their ceasefire talks at the Peace Center in Yangon to coordinate for jointly drafting a single text document for the nationwide cease-fire proposal before a formal peace talks continues.

The meeting was attended by representatives of 21 ethnic armed groups including 16 from the National Cease-fire Coordination Team (NCCT), parliamentarians and military representatives.  U Aung Min, vice chairman of the Union Peacemaking Work Committee called on all parties to participate in the meeting to sign a national ceasefire.

Before that, Prime Minister U Thein Sein told the parliament that the government that some agreements have been reached with ethnic leaders on the issue, expressing his belief that the six decade-long civil war is about to end soon. The government claimed reaching individual cease-fire agreements with 14 ethnic armed groups out of 16 since the President's peace offer was extended in August 2011.
