The celebration also included a boat race on the Ben Hai river and a festival of Bai choi folk singing, which was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Hien Luong bridge over the Ben Hai River served as the border line between north and south Vietnam during the anti-US resistance war. Hit by thousands of tonnes of bombs and shells, Quang Tri was one of the most devastated localities in Vietnam during the war.

Earlier, the Hien Luong-Ben Hai relic site hosted an art performance titled “The desire for reunification” co-organized by Nhan Dan (People) newspaper and the Vietnam News Agency.

“Freedom and independence have been the burning desire of generations of Vietnamese. We’ll never forget those who sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom we enjoy today,” said Nhan Dan’s Editor-in-Chief Thuan Huu.
