New EU leaders officially take office

(VOVWORLD) - European Union leaders on Sunday celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Lisbon Treaty.

Sunday was also the first day at work for the new Commission under its German president, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as for the Council, under Belgium’s Charles Michel.

Von der Leyen, Michel, European Parliament President Sassoli, and ECB Chief Christine Lagarde hosted a ceremony at the House of European History in Brussels, where Michel said the Treaty of Lisbon acknowledged diversity as a crucial part of European DNA. He said the EU needs to continue the treaty during EU reform. Von der Leyen said she hopes EU members will continue to develop the bloc. Parliament President David Sassoli said it is time for the EU to turn its promises into results that improve people’s lives.
