First is because there are 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, making it the most complex culture in Southeast Asia.

Sapa in the northern province of Lao Cai is a popular base for tourists wishing to visit minority markets and villages and trek in the mountains.

Ha Giang province, further to the northeast, has an even richer mix of minorities. Tourists are recommended to visit the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi for a good grounding.

The New Zealand Herald recommends Phu Quoc, a resort island in Kien Giang province, which is frequently called a paradise island. It’s essential charm lies in its intact glorious white-sand beaches, especially on the west coast, its warm seas, spectacular sunsets and laid-back charm.

Ha Long Bay is also a place that will not disappoint tourists.

The capital city of Hanoi is a must-see place which is key to understanding modern-day Vietnam. Visiting downtown Hanoi will take you to the heart of the French Quarter with its neoclassical opera house, and also to strolling distance of peaceful Hoan Kiem Lake. And a short distance to the north lies the bustling Old Quarter. In the west, the Temple of Literature is another oasis, while the complex of botanical gardens, the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Uncle Ho’s actual house reflect Vietnam’s momentous history.

“Fuel up on the delicious street food as you go,” the daily says.

The New Zealand Herald also suggests visiting Hoi An ancient city in Quang Nam province, Ho Chi Minh City, the busiest and most crowded urban city in Vietnam, the Cu Chi tunnels and the Vinh Moc tunnels.
