(VOVworld) – On Friday, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that North Korea had fired a ballistic missile, which flew eight hundred kilometers into the sea off its east coast, just a few days after leader Kim Jong Un ordered further missile and nuclear tests.

Tension on the peninsula is increasing as North Korea continues its defiance of new UN Security Council sanctions imposed earlier this month. The US and South Korea also imposed unilateral economic sanctions on North Korea.

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Russia opposes unilateral sanctions on North Korea. She said sanctions on North Korea must be a collective decision of the international community approved by the UN Security Council and aimed at improving the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

China also voiced opposition to the US’s new sanctions on North Korea, saying Washington’s action could heighten tensions on the peninsula.
