Nuclear Security Summit opens in the Netherlands

(VOVworld) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, leaders of 53 nations, the UN Secretary General, the IAEA’s Director General, and the EU President attended the third Nuclear Security Summit in the Netherlands on Monday.

In their addresses at the opening ceremony, the host country’s Prime Minister, the UN Secretary General, and the South Korean President welcomed the remarkable achievements of the previous summits in Washington in 2010 and Seoul in 2012, and underlined stronger international cooperation with UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA

Following the opening ceremony, participants discussed policies in the framework of the third meeting. On Tuesday, PM Dung attended three plenary and special sessions. He will deliver a speech at a plenary session in which he will reiterate Vietnam’s consistent stance of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, ensuring nuclear safety and security, being responsible to the international community, and supporting the rights of countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Earlier, PM Dung held a series of meetings with heads of state and government leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Barack Obama, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Korean President Park Geun Hye.

In an exchange with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Dung praised the progress in their bilateral relations and called for specific plans to boost their cooperation. The Steering Committee for Vietnam - China Cooperation will soon convene a meeting to work out measures to bolster the relationship. Prime Minister Dung asked the Vietnamese Sub-Committee to make preparations for that meeting. President Xi took the occasion to invite Dung to visit China.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama praised Vietnam’s contributions to past Nuclear Security Summits. In regards to the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, Obama mentioned key achievements and pledged a flexible approach to TPP negotiations with Vietnam, adding that the US will open its market to Vietnamese apparel, footwear, farm produce, and seafood. Obama promised to make an official visit to Vietnam soon. PM Dung told Obama he expects the two nations to deepen their comprehensive partnership across a broad spectrum of areas. He vowed that Vietnam will join US and other nations to conclude the TPP negotiations in view of their interest in narrowing the development gap. He asked the US to consider Vietnam’s interests, support Vietnam in the negotiations and recognise Vietnam as a market economy soon.

Prime Minister Dung and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, during their conversation, promised to effectively realise the outcomes of President Truong Tan Sang’s recent visit to Japan.

President of the Republic of Korea Park Geun-hye said she hopes that Korea and Vietnam will reach a free trade agreement as soon as possible to fuel their trade and investment.

At a meeting with Czech Deputy Prime Minister Pavel Belobradek, Dung asked that the Czech government continue to provide ODA to Vietnam, especially for child immunization and dealing with Agent Orange/Dioxin. Belobradek recommended cooperation between scientific research institutes in the two countries, adding that his government has established a parliamentarian friendship group.

Dung received Vietnam’s Honorary Consul General to the Netherlands W.H Schuurman who is also Chairman of the Netherlands- Vietnam Chamber of Commerce. Dung called on Schuurman to continue working closely with the Vietnamese Embassy to increase two-way trade and improve the position of the Netherlands as Vietnam’s third biggest trading partner in the European Union.

National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan shared a work session with Ard Van Der Steur, Vice President of the Dutch House of Representatives’ standing committee.
