OIC holds emergency meeting on occupied Syrian Golan

(VOVworld) – On Sunday, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) announced it would convene an extraordinary meeting on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement last week affirming Israel’s eternal sovereignty over the Golan Heights and calling for international recognition that Golan is a part of Israel.

The OIC will meet on Tuesday at its headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to discuss “Israeli escalation against the occupied Syrian Golan”. The 57-member OIC called Prime Minister Netanyahu’s statement a “provocative act” and Israel’s actions “a serious escalation and flagrant violation of the Resolution of international legitimacy and international law”.

In early April, the OIC held its annual high-level meeting, focusing on Palestine’s struggle, members’ conflicts, and the war on terrorism. At the meeting, OIC approved a resolution on Palestinian issues that supports international efforts to restart the peace process.
