Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Truong Son told a meeting of the Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) in Hanoi on Wednesday that the quality of ARV treatment has been improved over the years. Vietnam was the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to commit  to achieving the World Health Organization’s 90–90-90 global HIV targets (90% know their HIV status, 90% on sustained treatment, and 90% virally suppressed) in 2014, targeting to stop the epidemic by 2030.

World Health Organisation representative in Vietnam, Dr. Kidong Park, said Vietnam is one of the very few countries in the Pacific region that has seen a dramatic increase in ARV coverage. While noting the resourcefulness with which HIV patients are provided access to treatment, he added that the new approach has brought services closer to the people and made them easier to access, reducing costs and travel time for patients, especially those living in rural, remote and isolated areas.
