Over 171 million people have contracted COVID-19

(VOVWORLD) - As of Tuesday, there have been more than 171 million COVID-19 infections around the world and nearly 3.6 million deaths, according to worldometers.info.

The United States remains the most severely affected country, with over 609,000 deaths and 34 million infections, followed by India and Brazil. 

The European Commission on Monday approved the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children 12 or older. Meanwhile, the Danish government has requested its medical sector to reconsider its decision to exclude the Johnson & Johnson vaccine from its national vaccination program.

The WHO has announced that, to avoid any stigma, coronavirus variants are to be named after letters of the Greek alphabet instead of after their place of first discovery. The organization has named the four known variants Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, reflecting their order of detection. New variants should follow this pattern through the Greek alphabet.
